Old cars are a fantastic source of scrap metal that can be salvaged and sold for good scrap metal prices in Calgary. If you've got an old car that you don't intend to use again and that's just sitting in the driveway developing rust, then it can be a good idea to take it apart for some valuable scrap. According to the Calgary scrap metal recycling pros at Federal Metals Inc., here are the scrap metals you can find in an old car:

- Copper

Copper has been used extensively in cars since they were first manufactured, and continues to be used even more extensively in today's electric and hybrid vehicles. The alternators, starters, brakes, connectors, and bearings are all made out of or contain copper. Depending on the car, you might be able to find anywhere from 15 to over 40 kg of copper, much of it in the wiring. Copper wiring is used all throughout a car's safety and signaling system.

- Steel

Steel is also accepted at Calgary scrap metal facilities and, because of its strength and durability, can be found throughout much of a car's frame. Other car components made out of steel include the trunk, hood, and doors. Steel makes up about 60% of the weight of an average compact car, accounting for roughly 840 kg.

- Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is not found too commonly on the average car, but may have been used to make the exhaust. If a magnet does not stick to your car's exhaust, then there's a good chance it's made of stainless steel.

- Aluminum

Aluminum, typically in the form of much stronger cast aluminum, is often used to make car doors, hoods, and rims. Because it can stand up well to heat and friction, cast aluminum is also commonly used within the engine.

- Platinum & Palladium

Platinum and palladium are both used to make up components of a vehicle's catalytic converter, where they can help to reduce emissions. There is no need to try taking the catalytic converter apart and to separate the platinum and palladium. It can be brought to a recycling facility whole.

- Lead

Lead can be found inside a car's lead-based battery, which, like the catalytic converter, should also be scrapped as a whole. Because of its weight, lead is also used to make a car's wheel weights. The wheel weights are responsible for ensuring that a car's tires are evenly balanced so as to avoid uneven wear.
